The highlight is the uniquely beautiful murals created by Mr. Thong Thipcha, a folk artisan from Maha Sarakham. These paintings adorn both the interior and exterior of the sim (ordination hall).
The first thing that catches the eye is the color palette. The artisan used tempera in soothing shades of indigo, yellow, and white. The painting style features exaggerated proportions, giving the scenes a lively, playful feel, with characters portrayed in dynamic, acrobatic poses.

The epic poem Sang Sinxay (also known as Sang Sinchai or Sinsai) is a foundational masterpiece of Lao and Isan (northeastern Thai) literature. Penned by the court poet Pang Kham between the mid-16th and 17th centuries, the myth follows a trio of magical brothers on a perilous quest to rescue their abducted aunt.

The Miraculous Birth
The story begins with a king who, after wandering as a monk, marries seven princesses. Six queens give birth to six ordinary princes, but through divine intervention, the youngest queen bears supernatural triplets: an elephant with giant golden tusks (called Siho), a golden snail, and a boy clutching a bow named Sinxay.
Manipulated by a jealous court astrologer, the king exiles the youngest queen and her magical children. The Lord of Heaven intervenes and grants them a sky castle, where the brothers grow up sheltered but safe.

The Abduction and The Quest
Years later, a powerful flying demon known as Nyak Koumphan abducts the king's sister, Soumountha. Desperate, the king begs his six older, cowardly sons to rescue her, but they fail miserably. Ultimately, Sinxay steps up. Accompanied by his brothers, the golden elephant-lion (Siho) and the golden snail, he embarks on an arduous, mythic journey through enchanted forests and treacherous mountains to confront the Nyak.
The Climax and Moral Lesson
After overcoming magical monsters, giants, and the elements, the brothers defeat the demon and rescue their aunt. However, the six older, cowardly princes attempt to betray Sinxay and take credit for the rescue. Eventually, the truth is revealed to the king, and Sinxay’s virtue and loyalty ultimately triumph.
Rooted deeply in Buddhist philosophy, the folktale is a teaching of dharma—showcasing that love, compassion, and courage will always prevail over anger, greed, and ignorance. You can explore more of its history and cultural significance on Wikipedia.
