เฉวียนฟ้า Rhynchoglossum

Rhychoglossum
Rhynchoglossum is a genus of plant in family Gesneriaceae. In recent times, members of the former genus Klugia are also included. Species within the broader genus are found in India, southern China to New Guinea and about three species in tropical America. The genus has a leaf arrangement that is termed as alternate-distichous and the leaves are asymmetric in shape. The flowers have two lips. The older genus Klugia had four stamens compared to the typical two but Klugia from southern India are found to be very close based on molecular evidence.

A. habit; B. flowers; C. opened flower, with ventral part of corolla tube removed; D. ventral part of corolla tube; E. capsule.
Photos by Manop Poopath.

Similar to Rhynchoglossum obliquum in its personate flower and white to pale purple corolla, but differs by having 4 fertile stamens, the lower lip having 2 bluish purple to dark blue patches, the ventral surface of the corolla tube having a pale yellow stripe from the middle of throat downwards, and in having several tufts of hairs in the tube (vs 2 fertile and 2 sterile stamens, only a white to yellow spot at the centre of the lower lip, and without tufts of hairs inside). It is also similar to Rhynchoglossum mirabilis and R. saccatum in its 4 fertile stamens, but differs by having the mouth of the corolla tube closed, the tube itself dilated and dorsoventrally compressed, and the lower and upper lips nearly equal(vs ringent corolla, tube dilated and not dorsoventrally compressed, lower lip longer than upper lip).

Ecology.— Shaded areas on limestone, mixed deciduous forest, 30–60 m elevation. Flowering and fruiting in October–November.

Middletonia

Middletonia

Middletonia
is a genus of flowering plants in the family Gesneriaceae. It includes five species native to Asia, ranging from the eastern Himalayas through Indochina to Peninsular Malaysia and southern China.

Five species are accepted.
  • Middletonia multiflora (R.Br.) C.Puglisi
  • Middletonia regularis (Ridl.) C.Puglisi
  • Middletonia reticulata (Barnett) C.Puglisi

  • Middletonia multiflora (R. Br.) C. Puglisi var. caulescens (Z. R. Xu et B. L. Burtt) C. Puglisi

Type species: Middletonia multiflora (R.Br.) C.Puglisi.
Five species, found in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia. Four in Thailand.

The genus Middletonia in Thailand is revised. We recognise four species, including the newly described Middletonia glebosa C.Puglisi and the resurrected M. reticulata(Barnett) C.Puglisi. A key to the species, full descriptions and proposed conservation assessments are provided.

    🟢Middletonia evrardii (Pellegr.) C.Puglisi, Taxon. 65: 286. 2016

    Distribution.— Lao PDR, Vietnam.
Thailand.— EASTERN: Nakhon Ratchasima, CENTRAL: Nakhon Nayok
     Ecology.— Evergreen forest.

Note.— The material from Thailand differs slightly from the Vietnamese material, especially in the leaf shape which is more elongated and with an acute apex in the Thai specimens. As there are rather few specimens from throughout the distribution range, with no floral material from Thailand available for dissection, further collections are necessary to assess whether the Thai and Vietnamese plants belong to one or more species.

    🟢 Middletonia gebosa C.Puglisi

    Distribution.— Cambodia. Thailand.— NORTHERN: Sukhothai
Ecology.— Mixed deciduous forest with bamboo on granite bedrock.

Type: Thailand, Sukhothai, Ram Kham Haeng National Park, Khao Luang, alt. 520 m, 11 Oct. 2012, fr., Middleton, Karaket, Suddee & Triboun 5559 (holotype E [E00547434]; isotypes BK, BKF [SN201922]).

Middletonia gebosa C.Puglisi: A. Habit, showing young fruit; B.Flowers; Mreticulata (Barnett) C.Puglisi: D. Habit; E. Flowers.   Photographs by Preecha Karaket (A, C–E) and David Middleton (B).
Similar to Middletonia regularis in having the inflorescences shorter than the leaves and to Middletonia reticulata in the shortly caulescent habit. Differs from both in having a dense indumentum on the adaxial side of the leaf, with glands and eglandular hispid hairs (upperleafsurface glabrescent or minutely glandular in Middletonia regularis, glabrescent in M. reticulata), and in the short, non-twisted, lumpy and irregular fruit (longer, weakly to strongly twisted, smooth and regular in M. regularis and M. reticulata).

Notes.— In Ram Kham Haeng National Park this species grows in a mixed population with Middletonia reticulata. The two are readily told apart in the field by Middletonia glebosa having softer, paler leaves, a shorter inflorescence, generally slightly smaller flowers, and the curious short, straight, lumpy fruit. The species is known only from Ram Kham Haeng National Park and a single collection made around 150 years ago in Cambodia. The Cambodian collection, placed in Paraboea regularis by Xu et al. (2008), is only in fruit so the identification will need to be verified with flowering material. However, the fruit of this species is rather distinctive.

    🟢Middletonia regularis (Ridl.) C.Puglisi,
    Taxon. 65: 287. 2016.

    Distribution.— Malaysia.
Thailand.— PENINSULA: Surat Thani, Phangnga; SOUTH-WESTERN: Kanchanaburi.

Ecology.— Lowland evergreen forest on limestone soils.

Note.— The protologue of Paraboea monticola suggests the flowers to be much larger: “lobes … 6–9 × c. 6.5 mm”. However, none of the material available for this study had lobes longer than 3.3 mm.

🟢Middletonia reticulata (Barnett) C.Puglisi, comb. nov.
    — Boea reticulata Barnett, Nat. Hist. Bull. Siam Soc. 20: 20. 1961.
Type: Thailand, Chiang Mai, Mae Wang

Ecology.— Mixed deciduous forest on granite bedrock.

@ Khinnaree waterfall , Phu Lanka np.

Distribution.— Currently endemic to Thailand but possibly also occurring in Lao PDR and Myanmar.
Thailand.— NORTHERN: Mae Hong Son; Chiang Mai; Lamphun; Lampang; Phrae; Sukhothai.

Note.— This species is resurrected from synonymy of Middletonia multiflora (R.Br.) C.Puglisi from which it differs in the distinctively reticulate venation pattern covered in loose brown indumentum on the lower surface of the leaves, and in the auriculate leaf base. Middletonia multiflora has a denser indumentum on the leaf and the tertiary venation is less densely reticulate and less visible altogether. Middletonia multiflora is widespread along the northern distribution of the genus (from India to Vietnam), but none of the material from Thailand studied can be attributed to Mmultiflora.

    Nemantanthus

    Nematanthus
is a genus of flowering plants in the family Gesneriaceae. All of its species are endemic to Brazil.Compared to other gesneriads, Nematanthus has leaves that are small, succulent, and hard-surfaced. The plant has a trailing, branching, and spreading habit; it is generally an epiphyte in nature and a hanging-basket plant in cultivation. The flower has fused petals. In some species, the flower has a "pouch" at the bottom. The fancied resemblance of such flowers to a goldfish gives these plants the common name goldfish plant or guppy plant.

Stauranthera is a genus of flowering plants in the family Gesneriaceae, native to Bangladesh, the Nicobar Islands, Assam, the eastern Himalayas, south-central and southeast China (including Hainan), Southeast Asia, and Malesia to New Guinea. It is very close morphologically and genetically to Loxonia.

Perennial or annual monocarpic herbs. Stem fleshy-succulent, branched or not. Leaves opposite, strongly anisophyllous, the large leaves with short or long petiole, lamina strongly asymmetrical, elliptic to ovate, base strongly unequal-sided, apex acute-acuminate or blunt; sparsely hairy, lower side usually pubescent; the small leaves reduced to a tiny cordi- or reniform auricle. Inflorescence terminal, an alternicladic thyrse with pair- or single-flowered cymes or solitary flowers emerging from small bracts; bracteoles lacking; flowers pedicellate. Sepals in the lower part with conspicuous plications at the sinuses. Corolla 5-merous, either rotate-widely campanulate, ecalcarate, or zygomorphic and spurred at the base, blue or white, sometimes with a yellow blotch at the palate. Stamens 4, all anthers coherent and forming a cross-like figure. Nectary absent. Ovary globose or ovoid, style short, stigma large-capitate or bilamellate. Capsule globose, irregularly falling into pieces in the upper half. Seeds small, blackish-brown, reticulate.
