Phayao (Northern Thai: ᩕᨻᨿᩣ᩠ᩅ; Thai: พะเยา,Thai pronunciation: [pʰā.jāw]) is a city (thesaban mueang) in northern Thailand, capital of Phayao Province. For administrative purposes the city is divided into 15 sub-districts (tambons), which are further subdivided into 172 administrative villages. The town is on the shore of the Phayao Lake.^[1] It dates back to the semi-independent city-state (mueang), founded between 900 and 1,000 years ago.

As of 2005 Phayao had a population of 19,118. Phayao lies 726 km north of Bangkok.

The Phi Pan Nam Range runs across the province from north to south. The city of Phayao is on Phayao Lake (Kwan Phayao) in the valley of the Ing River. Three big mountains surround the valley, the Doi Luang ,Don Khun Mae Fat and Doi Khun Mae Tam . The total forest area is 3,182 km² (1,229 sq mi) or 51.4 percent of provincial area.

There are five national parks, of which four in region 15 (Chiang Rai) and Tham Sakoen in region 13 (Phrae), they are the protected areas in Phayao province.^[6] (Visitors in fiscal year 2024)^[7]

Wildlife sanctuaries

There are two wildlife sanctuaries in region 15 (Chiang Rai) and they are the protected areas in Phayao province.

Gesneriaceae

Several notable Gesneriaceae species are found in Phayao Province, Thailand, including Microchirita maxima, Petrocodon flavus, and Paraboea khaoyaica. These plants typically grow in limestone hill habitats and protected national parks in the region. 

Noteworthy Gesneriaceae in Phayao

Microchirita maxima: A recently described species found on limestone hills at roughly 770 meters elevation in Phu Sang National Park (Phu Sang District). It flowers from August to October. 
Petrocodon flavus: A rare species with pale yellow flowers endemic to limestone areas in Tham Pha Daeng, Doi Pha Chor, inside Phu Sang National Park (Chiang Kham District) at 876 meters elevation. 
Paraboea khaoyaica: A gesneriad species whose distribution range includes the limestone formations of Phayao Province alongside neighboring Lampang.

Wat Analayothipyaram is a major mountaintop temple in Phayao province, famous for its grand mixed-style architecture, giant Buddha statues, and panoramic views of Phayao Lake.
